Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Goodwin Keats (1757-1834)
Keats had a very active career in both the American and French Wars. He became Governor of Greenwich Hospital in 1821 as a vice-admiral, rising to admiral by seniority in 1825. When he died in 1834 his early naval friend, William IV, commissioned a bust of him by Chantrey in his memory which still stands in the Chapel (see PAI8792), paired with one by Behnes commemorating his successor as Governor (1834-1839), Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy. He is shown here wearing the sash and star of the GCB and a captain's medal for his part as flag captain to Sir John Duckworth at the Battle of San Domingo in 1806. Jackson was born in Yorkshire where he attracted the patronage of Lord Mulgrave. In 1805 Sir George Beaumont sent him to the Royal Academy Schools where he became a friend of David Wilkie and Benjamin Robert Haydon. In 1819 he travelled with Sir Francis Chantrey to Rome where his portrait of Canova was admired. His portraits show the influence of Raeburn and Lawrence.
