Vice-Admiral Sir Roger Curtis (1746-1816)

A half-length portrait to the left wearing vice-admiral's full dress uniform and the First of June medal and chain. Painted in about 1800 this portrait is a pair with the half-length of Howe BHC2789. While on the North American Station Curtis was noticed by Shuldham, the admiral, who took him into his flagship. In the following year, 1776 he promoted him into the 'Senegal'. He became a flag captain to Lord Howe in 1777 and in 1782 was at Gibraltar when Howe relieved it. He returned to England in the 'Victory', Howe's flagship, and was knighted. Curtis was again with Howe as flag captain in 1790 and after a short break, captain of the fleet for as long as Howe flew his flag, which included the battle of the First of June.British School
