View of rocks and islets off Sotome (Nagasaki), Japan
Japanese inshore fishing boats, shown against a background of distinctive and picturesque rocks. These are, from left to right, the islets of Ko-zumo, Oh-zumo - which is a natural rock arch -, Hako-jima and Ike-jima, as seen looking westward from the coast of what is today the Sotome district of the city of Nagasaki. The principal boat appears to have women and perhaps children sitting amidships.
