This view of the New Customs House was taken from the river Thames, in the foreground there are a number of ships including a ceremonial barge. The Customs House was the place where customs men would receive the official documents from which they would charge duties on imports and exports. These were taxes on trade and formed a large part of the revenue collected by the government. In the distance the Tower of London can be seen. Plate No.34.
