Warship (1862)

Scale:Unknown. A contemporary half block model of a shotproof ship (circa 1862). The hull is mainly carved from a solid block of wood (?) with additions around the bow, stern and midship along the waterline. It is painted black overall and is complete with ten gunports let into the hull at deck level. Both the bow and stern are almost with the midship section shaped in the traditional fashion below the waterline whilst above, the flat sides have tumblehome and angle inwards towards the flush deck. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white surrounded by a stained moulded edging. There is a painted metal plaque on which is inscribed "Design for shotproof ship, proposed by Mr Marshallsay. 1862. (37)".
