Watch in silver pair case. The back of the inner case is engraved with the name 'Capt. T.M.Hardy' and on the back of the outer case are the words 'Capt T. M. Hardy', '1798' and 'Vanguard', between two foul anchors.
Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839) replaced Captain Edward Berry (1768-1831), later Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Berry, as Nelson's flag Captain after the Battle of the Nile in 1798. As the watch has a later hallmark, the inscription that refers to Hardy is almost certainly dubious.
