Watch worn by Nelson when he was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar

Made by Josiah Emery and originally housed in a pocket-watch case (almost certainly 18ct gold), the mechanism was inserted into a gilt-brass carriage clock case by Nelson's niece, Lady Bridport, in the 1840s. The case is inscribed: 'THE CHRONOMETER OF Horatio Viscount Nelson. WORN BY HIM AT THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR, placed in this case by his Niece, CHARLOTTE MARY, LADY BRIDPORT, to be preserved for any one of her descendents who may ENTER THE NAVY'.

The mechanism itself is highly important. It is one of a series of about 33 watches based on the work of Thomas Mudge, which were the foundation of virtually all subsequent mechanical pocket and wrist watches to this day. Only 22 of these pioneering watches are known to have survived and Nelson's is one of them.
