Webley & Scott Mark I Automatic
Automatic pistol. The stock consists of blue steel with chequered rubber grips. The butt incorporates the magazine and there is a magazine release latch on the underside of the butt. A lanyard ring is fitted to the heel of the butt. The back of the slide is vertically fluted to afford a grip when cocking. The magazine contains seven rounds. The lock is automatic. The barrel is round with a foresight. The calibre is 0.455in. The pistol is inscribed on the barrel 'WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD/PISTOL SELF-LOADING 455 MARK I 1913'. There are proof marks on the trigger and back of action. The pistol is in a brown leather case lined with red baize containing a cleaning rod. The outside of the case is inscribed 'G.R.T', the inside lid of the case 'W W GREENER/Gun and Ammunition Maker/WINNER AT ALL THE GREAT LONDON GUN TRIALS/Prize Works St Mary's Square, Birmingham AND 29 PALL MALL LONDON S W'. The Webley & Scott Mark I pistol was approved for Government service on May 19 1913 and adopted by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines as their official weapon. It was extensively used on land and sea in World War I.
