Component model
Scale: 1:6. A sectional model showing the scuttle hole for iron-plated wooden built warships (circa 1862). The model is made almost entirely of wood, with the inboard side painted a creamy white and the top end, rear faces and ends finished in either natural mahogany or stained and varnished. The inboard face shows a stepped arrangement on which is mounted the scuttle hole, which is elliptical in shape and tapers towards the outboard side. Within the scuttle hole itself are two vertical holes which are probably part of the mechanism used to make a scuttle hole watertight. There is also a swivelling and angledsteel bracket, which is forked at the top, again probably part of the securing mechanism. By raising this bracket from its bottom end it can be pivoted from side-to-side. Model inscribed "Woolwich Yard March 1862". Label reads "Plugging tube scuttles in iron plated wooden ships Woolwich Dockyard 1862".
