HMS 'Neptune' (1832)

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of HMS 'Neptune' (1832), as converted into a 90-gun screw battleship in 1859. The hull is carved from a solid block of wood(?) and is painted a metallic copper colour below the main wales. The topsides are painted black, interspersed by the two gundecks highlighted by creamy white horizontal bands with gunports let in and painted black. The gunports, above the three sets of channels(modern replacements), have been cut into the upperworks and vary in shape. The bow is fitted with head rails just aft of the decorated beakhead with a stump bowsprit above. The main and quarter decks are flush and fitted with a single telescopic funnel together with three stump masts painted a creamy white colour. The stern is complete with carved rounded galleries, painted black with the mouldings and frames highlighted in gold. The stern frame is fitted with a rudder complete with gudgeons and pintles and an aperture for the single screw(not fitted). The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white surrounded by a stained moulded edging, on which is inscribed "(15)" under the keel amidships. There is a detached plaque which is inscribed "165 Neptune, 90 guns, 1832 Scale 1/48 (1/4" to 1') Built at Portsmouth as a 120 gun first rate. Converted to a 90 gun screw battleship of 500 h.p. in 1859. Sold 1875. The model shows her as a steamer. Dimensions: - Gun deck 205ft. 8 in. Beam 55ft. 6 1/2in.". Number "(22)" on backboard.
