John Wilkinson, a Greenwich Pensioner, ca.1832
The Greenwich pensioners were retired and injured seamen who were cared for by the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich. The first pensioners moved into the hospital in 1705, and by 1815 there were over 2,000. The men wore a uniform, which was originally grey, then brown and then blue. The outsider's impression of the pensioners was that of old, retired, mostly healthy men who were enjoying their twilight years in Greenwich. In fact, boys from 12 years old could be injured while serving in the navy and enter the Royal Hospital, and some sailors were badly disfigured or injured.
