Mauser Model 1893

Mauser rifle. The stock consists of a slight comb to butt, no pistol grip and little drop. A sling loop is fitted to the underside of the butt and another is fitted to the retaining band. A slotted lug is fitted for a bayonet. It has a steel butt plate and steel fore-end cap. The lock is bolt operated with a vertical box type magazine beneath, which holds five rounds. There is a saftey thumb catch at the rear of the bolt assembly. The barrel is rifled, has four grooves and a right hand twist. The sights consists of a folding carriage in front of the action graduated in Turkish (from possibly 250-2000 metres). When folded flat, a 'V' on top at the rear is used; when vertical, another 'V' (mounted centrally on a slide operated by twin knurled projections which releases the retaining spring) comes into use. The foresight is composed of an adjustable blade. The calibre is 7.65mm. There are inscriptions on this rifle that are all in Turkish but which incorpore the Sultan's cypher (possibly Abd-ul Hamid II) on top of the action at the front together with the number '80111'. A line of Turkish script along the left side of the action includes the number '1312'. The bayonet is steel mounted and has a hilt with wooden grip and cross-guard with long upward curved fore quillon with ball finial. The rear quillon ends in a loop for the rifle barrel. The blade is straight, single-edged and flatbacked. The Sultan's cypher is inscribed on the pommel. It is the officially shortened 1890 model bayonet.
