Callina [Colina], 15 miles north of Santiago, Jany 13th 1851 [Chile]
Mounted in album with PAI4605-PAI4655, PAI4657-PAI4670.; No.49. S.P.A.34. No. 49 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849-1852. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. This is the fourth of seven drawings (PAI4653-PAI4659) which record Fanshawe's inland excursion to see the Andes, while his ship 'Daphne' was at Valparaiso over the winter of 1850-51. For the general circumstances see PAI4563. Fanshawe only briefly described this location in his letter to his wife of 19 January: 'Leaving Santiago on Monday 13th, we halted at a very pretty village called Colina, near which are hot springs, and slept at Chacabuco, fifteen miles further on' (Fanshawe [1904], p. 267). Colina now lies on Route 57 north of Santiago, but the church shown here does not appear to survive.
Edward Gennys Fanshawe
