Deer Island, Beaver Harbour, Vancouver's Island, July 15th 1851 [Canada]
Mounted in album with PAI4605-PAI4662, PAI4664-PAI4670.; No.56. No. 56 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849-1852. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. Beaver Harbour is a bay south of Port Hardy, on the north-east side of Vancouver Island, in the Vancouver Sound. Fort Rupert is on its south-eastern edge. Even today the northern part of the Island is relatively wild compared to the more heavily populated south and a place for those who enjoy natural wilderness and related pursuits. Peel Island, also off Beaver Harbour is openly accessible: Deer Island however remains property of the Fort Rupert band of the Kwakiutl people, whose permission must be obtained to land on it. Fanshawe's drawing skilfully shows the reflection of the island in the calm water of the bay, with a native canoe in the foreground. PAI4661 is a specific study of Indians at Fort Rupert.
