New York harbour

Scale: ca. 1:50 000.

Following full occupation of French Canada in 1763, Britain possessed a vast territory in North America. The coastline was virtually uncharted, so the British government funded a programme of surveying on an unprecedented scale, superintended by J.F.W. Des Barres. Several assistants were employed, including James Cook, but Des Barres undertook all the engraving for publication himself, creating charts that were both accurate and elegant. The American Revolutionary War began while he work was in progress and the complete atlas, 'The Atlantic Neptune' was not published until 1777. The individual charts were then revised frequently until 1782. The museum holds the definitive reference collection of 'Atlantic Neptune' charts.
