Panorama of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Mounted in album with PAI4605-PAI4607, PAI4609-PAI4670.; Four sections stuck together. Technique includes scraped highlights. No. 3 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849-1852. A fold-out panoramic drawing, on four joined sheets, of which the second from right is stuck down on the album page. It looks south-west towards Rio from inside the bay, with the Sugarloaf mountain and entrance from the sea on the left. Fanshawe arrived at Rio in the 'Daphne' on 27 January 1849 after a passage of 23 days from Madeira, and sailed for Montevideo on 7 February. He reported 'the neighbourhood...too beautiful not to be enjoyable, but the weather was very hot and the town terribly odoriferous' (Fanshawe [1904] p.161). He also did a sketch chart of the harbour of Rio (now PAI472 and misplaced in his Baltic and Mediterranean album) which appears to correspond to the drawing. It shows his viewpoint was at the Fort de Boa Viagem, north-east of Rio itself, and radial sectors on the chart correspond with each sheet of this drawing.
