A man in a red frogged coat and tassled cocked hat

This slightly caricatured figure must be someone seen on Bray's first African voyage. The dress is not that of an an officer of the Marines, or necessarily military. The tassled cocked hat and rather theatrical 'hand to heart' gesture suggest it may be a Portuguese official from their fort at Whydah, which was the ship's last port of call before sailing for the West Indies on 4 April 1775. If so it is an example of Bray's sometimes inaccurate later dating of his drawings, based only on recollection. The ship arrived at Barbados on 31 May so it is unlikely to be from the Caribbean stage of the voyage.
