Battle of the Saints punch bowl
On 12 April 1782 Admiral George Brydges Rodney won the greatest naval victory of the American Revolutionary War by defeating the French fleet in the West Indies off the islands known as Les Saintes. Commemorative items of all types were produced to celebrate the victory, including a series of Chinese export-porcelain punch-bowls decorated with a grisaille painting of the battle. The scene is after an oil painting by Robert Dodd, which was engraved and published in 1783. the engraving would have been sent to the porcelain painters in China, who supplied the order, producing different inscriptions, coats of arms and caricatures on individual bowls as commissioned.
