Butterfield dial
Butterfield dial for latitudes 40-49 north. The first scale is octagonal and marked for 49, the second scale is oval and numbered 4-12, 1-8, the third is octagonal and numbered 4-12, 1-8, and the spaces between are filled by hatching. There is leaf decoration in the centre. The compass, which is incorrectly oriented, has a four-point rose with the cardinal points named in French and the quadrantal points indicated by single lines. The needle is blued, with a cross indicating North and is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. The main part of the gnomon is missing; only the bird index remains.
