Butterfield dial for latitudes 35-60 North
Butterfield dial for latitudes 35-60 North. Standard three-scale dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The second and third scales are numbered 4-12, 1-8, and there is a central circular acanthus design. The compass has a degree scale divided 0-90-0-90-0, and an eight-point rose with all eight points named in French. There is a flower engraved at the centre of the compass. Magnetic North is shown by a small fleur-de-lys at 8 West of North. The gnomon is adjustable for latitudes 35-60, and is decorated with foliate design. The reverse side of the dial-plate carries a table of latitudes in two columns, for places in Europe such as 'Strasbourg 49', 'Amsterdam 52' and 'Zurich 46'. Leaf decoration exists along the bottom edge and black enamelling has been used on the lettering and decoration.
This unusually large Butterfield dial is one of a few which cannot be described as a pocket dial. It is simpler in design than some of the smaller ones. It also covers a larger number of latitudes, with a gnomon adjustable for 35-60 North. However, the towns engraved on the underside do not reflect this breadth, being limited to 41-52. The compass has a degree scale, so that changes in magnetic variation can be taken into account. On the obverse side, it is signed 'CHAPOTOT A. PARIS'.
