Butterfield dial for latitudes 40˚-60˚ north, reverse
Butterfield dial for latitudes 40˚-60˚ north. The compass has cardinal, quadrantal and intermediate points; with the cardinal points named in French. North is offset 8˚ west of north to allow for magnetic variation but the compass has been inverted. The back of the dial-plate is filled with a table of latitudes in two columns, for example: 'Paris 49', 'Londres 52' and 'Madrid 41'. The case is octagonal and made of black fishskin with green velvet lining and a brass push-button clasp.
