'Centurion', 60 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of 'Centurion' (1732), a 60-gun two-decker ship of the line, built in the Georgian style. The model is decked and rigged. The maker, Benjamin Slade, was master shipwright at Plymouth in 1747. He has paid great attention to detail, including the use of treenails, the wooden nails or pegs used to fasten the planks to the frames. It was re-rigged in the Museum in 1936, using the original masts and spars.

This was the ship in which Commodore (later Admiral) George Anson made his famous circumnavigation of the world from 1740-44, during which he attacked the Spanish in the Pacific and returned with a fortune in silver.
