Creamware jug

Creamware jug commemorating Admiral of the Fleet, John Jervis, Earl St Vincent (1735-1823) and Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquis Cornwallis (1738-1805). Transfer-printed in black and hand-coloured in green, red and yellow. On one side a portrait inscribed 'EARL ST VINCENT K.B. ADMIRAL OF THE BLUE'. Below 'You have heard of a Howard, a Hawkins, a Drake,/Of a Raleigh Hawke Russel Howe Rodney & Blake/But here is a man off St Vincents you'll find him/Who leaves those brave tars at a distance behind him'. Above, the figure of Fame with a banner on a trumpet 'JARVIS Admiral of the BLUE' and Victory, with a ribbon inscribed: 'He hath taken 42 vessels off Martinique and was Commander in Chief at the Reduction of MARTINIQUE, ST LUCIA, MARIE GALANTE, DESEADA, the SAINTS, GUADELOUPE'. To the left, a ship with the inscription below: 'Sir John Jarvis with 15 sail on Feb 14 1797 attacked & defeated the Spanish Fleet who were 27 sail & took 4 of their largest ships'. On the other side of the jug a portrait inscribed 'MARQUIS CORNWALLIS'; 'To whose Clemency & Bravery Ireland owes her Preservation'. The portrait is flanked by figures inscribed 'JUSTICE' and 'MERCY' with military trophies and cornucopia. Under the lip a compass rose and the inscription 'COME BOX THE COMPASS'; 'Invented by Murphy a Dutchman AD1229 first exhibited at Venice 1260 Improved by Giora of Naples 1302 its declination discovered by Hartman 1538.'J.
