Dutch men-of-war off a craggy coast
An early picture, probably painted while de Vlieger was still living in Rotterdam. On the left a small boat in port and stern view, with several figures on board, moves away from the shore. She is going towards a man-of-war flying the Dutch flag, which is shown in starboard-broadside view refitting her rigging, with another ship at anchor beyond. On the right in the foreground, several boats are at anchor in shallow water. A collection of men is shown ashore, three standing in a group around a basket of fish.
