Enfield Maxim

Maxim machine gun on mount. Its recoil is used to load, fire and eject continuously while the trigger is held back. The gun is cooled by a water jacket around the barrel. The calibre is 0.303in. It is inscribed: 'ENFIELD 1917 arrow No972' Also inscribed on the stand is: 'ENFIELD 1900 N 608'. Naval Maxims were chambered for the .45 Gatling Gardner cartridge. They were made by Maxim Nordenfelt -between 1887-96, 195 were made in .45 GG), Vickers, Sons ; Maxim -between 1897-1904, 674 in .45 GG and by the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield between 1891-1917, 358 were made in .45 GG. Enfield had its own numbering system - No 1 was a naval gun and the first delivery did not take place from Enfield until 1893.
