Ensign, Imperial German Customs Service
Ensign of the Imperial German Customs Service. A label accompanying the flag states: 'This flag captured from the Germans at BUEA during the Cameroons campaign and is the property of Captain L H K Hamilton, Royal Navy'.
The flag is made of wool bunting with a linen hoist. It is machine sewn at the ends with the entire design printed on the surface and a rope and clip attached to hoist it.
The design is that of the Imperial German Foreign Office flag - horizontal stripes, black, white and red. The Imperial Eagle with red beak and claws on a white disc in the centre. The customs badge - a yellow anchor and red initials 'Z V' (zollverein) is placed at the upper hoist edge.
The ensign was acquired by Louis Henry Keppel Hamilton (1892-1957). The town of Buea had surrendered without resistance at the approach of British forces on 15 November 1914. Hamilton remained there until November 19th.
