Four shipping studies, including of a frigate action
At top right a pencil and watercolour study shows two frigates in action, inscribed above '3 rounds quick firing'. Top centre is a study of a similar frigate under sail, seen from starboard, with the masts and rigging in rather rubbed pencil work only. Top left is a sharp pencil study of a ship's beakhead, with a small figurehead. Across the bottom is an atmospheric pencil sketch of a seascape with a distant island and two ships on the horizon, and a piece of wreckage floating lower left.
