German chimney sweep at Marlag 'O' prisoner-of-war camp

During the Second World War Worsley served in the Royal Navy and in 1942, as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, was appointed Official Naval War Artist on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean. In 1943 he was captured by the Germans and spent the rest of the war in Marlag 'O' prisoner-of-war camp. While there he made portraits of his fellow prisoners as well as evocative and well characterised drawings of activities that took place in the camp. This drawing is signed and inscribed by the artist: German 'sweep'____J .Worsley Marlag 'O' 45.John WorsleyOriginal size: Sheet: 351 x 241 mm
