Half block model, multi-chine lifeboat, starboard broadside
Scale: 1:12. A builder's half block design model of a multi-chine lifeboat circa 1943. This model is constructed in 'bread and butter' fashion and was made to show the basic hull shape of a proposed design of a ship's lifeboat. The use of steel together with the technique of welding enabled the builders to produce hull shapes that could not be achieved in wood. The 'chines' are the angles in the hull as it turns down towards the keel. Not only do they provide greater strength and protection to the hull but they also add to its stability and sailing qualities. The backboard is inscribed, 'Steel multi-chine lifeboat in course of development, Jun 1943, by Messrs Rowhedge Ironworks Ltd'.
