HMS 'Plover' (1867)

Scale: Unknown. A model of the mess shelves as fitted onboard HMS 'Plover' (1867), a twin screw gunship. The model has been made in wood, and several labels have been applied to the removable cooking utensils, annotated; "Salt", "Pepper box" (twice), "Cup" (twice), "Canister", "Ladle", "Hook Pot" (twice). The two draws have been annotated "Knives and forks" and "Spoons". The model is roughly divided into three sections. The top section shows open storage divided into four parts. There are two paper labels marked '13' and 'Model of Mess Shelves as fitted on board the Plover at Deptford Yard Febr. 1867'. The middle section shows open storage for most of the utensils which are secured by a false floor with circular apertures cut into it and a brass rail along the front of the shelf. The lower section has two draws one above the other with wooden handles and on either side of the draws provision for two cooking pots with brass handles painted black and with provision for hooking them onto the brass rail.Original size: 229 mm x 76 mm x 249 mm
