HMS 'Polyphemus' (1881)
Scale: 1:48. A half block shipbuilders model of HMS 'Polyphemus' (1881), a torpedo ram. The model is made entirely in wood and constructed in bread and butter fashion. The hull is painted a coppery brown below the waterline with the upperworks and bulwarks painted grey, and divided by a thin white line along the waterline. There is a ram fitted to the bow on the underwater part of the hull together with a propeller shaft and bracket (propeller missing) and a rudder mounted to the skeg under the stern. There is a bulge amidships with a pronounced tumblehome above and below the waterline. There are three decks painted a light brown colour. Fixtures and fittings include a raised bridge with wings forward of a truncated funnel, an aft bridge conning position and a pair of lifeboats/landing boats mounted athwartships suspended from the raised bridge deck. The model is mounted on a wooden backboard painted creamy-white, with a stained and varnished mahogany edging. Name "Polyphemus" on plaque. Hand painted in black on the reverse of the backboard "R.N.E 4587" which may refer to its inclusion in the Royal Naval Exhibition, 1891.
