The model is made in wood which has been carved out internally, with metal fittings and is constructed in bread and butter fashion. The hull is painted a copper colour to indicate sheathing below the waterline. The upperworks and bulwarks are finished in black. The clipper shaped bow is fitted with a male figurehead, painted gold and lower trailboards. There is a rudder with gudgeons and pintles fitted to the stern frame with a propeller (missing) that can be raised or lowered. The upper portion of the hull is pierced for twelve gunports. Other external features include 19 square portholes, fitted with lids, for accommodation below, a single cathead and three sets of channels and chainplates, with deadeyes. The flush main deck are finished in natural wood and varnished with individual planks marked in black ink. The hull is fitted with three stump masts painted a creamy white, a pair of telescopic and truncated funnels in natural wood. Other fittings include a ventilator cowling, a capstan, two bollards, ships wheel and 12 deck hatches fitted with wooden gratings. On deck, at the bow and stern are a series of curved rails, on which the large carriage guns (not fitted) can be manoeuvred between the two rectangular-shaped gunports. The model is mounted on a wooden backboard painted creamy-white, edged with mahogany which has been stained and varnished Plaque inscribed "H.M.S. "Rinaldo", 17 guns 951 tons. Built at Portsmouth 1860". On deck, inscription painted in black "No. 338. 'Rinaldo'. Launched in March 1860". On backboard "(37)".
