Instructional model
Scale: Unknown. A sectional model depicting the iron beams and the method for connecting them to the ship's side, adopted in the 81-gun warship HMS 'Bombay' (1861), on her conversion to screw propulsion at Chatham Dockyard in 1861. The model has been made entirely of wood and is stained and polished. Four frames have been shown with nine sections of hull planking in position. The planks are alternating in size in a brick-work affect. The inner planking of the hull is similar, but four wooden chocks applied to the planking support a short section of deck above, and there is provision for accommodating knees, which are missing on the model.
A paper label has been applied to the inner hull planks marked '17'. The model is attached to a plain rectangular mahogany baseboard with bevelled edges. An illegible inscription has been hand written to the underside of the baseboard.
