Jonah and the whale
An oval panel showing five Dutch ships in a storm on the open sea. The most prominent, in the centre, is shown struggling through the waves in port-broadside view. It appears to be in imminent danger both from the storm and the whale immediately alongside, menacingly blowing water from its spout. While the viewer is invited to respond to the dramatic imperative of the narrative of Jonah and the Whale, the painting can also be seen as an allegory, concentrating on the confrontation between man and nature.
