List of officers and men from HMS 'Erebus', dated 1845
This crew list from John Franklin's two ships was almost certainly produced after their disappearance as a memorial to the men who died. Clearly marked are the names of the three - John Torrington, William Briane and John Hartnell - who died in 1846 and were buried on Beechey Island. James Elliot, the sail maker, and James Burt, the armourer, had a lucky escape: both were invalided back to England before reaching the Arctic.
