Variation shown. Additional Places: Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City. Contents Note: Inset: The City of Saigon as fortified in 1790 and surveyed in 1799, Inset: Coral banks in the Saigon River. Inscribed 'Cochin China preliminary chart of the Saigon or Don-Nai River with the Dantrang and Loirap branches leading to the city of Saigon compiled from the tracings of the French survey now in progress. 1861'. In 1859 the French seized Saigon and established colonial government. British interest in this development was more than navigational; by 1883 France was in control of all IndoChina, with Saigon as the capital.
