This portrait shows the head and shoulders of Mlle Mars. She is facing to the left of the picture, looking over her left shoulder at the artist and us the viewer. Mlle Mars was a celebrated Parisian actress of the end of the eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth century. The existence of this particular print in the Herschels collection may suggest some member of the family attended the play in question though there appears to be no additional evidence to support this.
