Officer of the Watch telescope

This achromatic telescope is typical of the type used on board ship in the late 19th century. It has a leather-covered barrel and a single silvered brass draw tube. The other fittings include a pivoted eyepiece cover and an extending sun shade. The objective lens cap is now missing. The maker's name is inscribed on the draw tube as 'Ross / London' with the serial number 'No. 27180'.

A second inscription records that the telescope was a gift to 'CAPTAIN J.R. JELLICOE. R.N. / FROM S.C.C. / XMAS. 97'. John Jellicoe (1859-1935), later Lord Jellicoe, joined the Royal Navy in 1872. He rose to the rank of Second Sea Lord by the First World War (1914-1918), commanding the Grand Fleet from 1914 to 1916, after which he was appointed First Sea Lord.
