Portrait of a Dutch Prince's yacht
Image information
Portrait of a Dutch Prince's yacht
This is a ship portrait viewed from the starboard quarter. On the tafferel between two pilasters, there is a round shield bearing the quartered and inescutcheoned arms of the Princes of Orange, wreathed, crowned and supported by two figures of Fame blowing trumpets. On the starboard quarter is a figure of Justice holding scales. On the port quarter there is a figure holding a shield. The yacht's leeboard and the side down to the second wale are very elaborately decorated.
This is a very detailed, accurate drawing, rubbed on the back and possibly based on an offset, though apparently not in reverse. It is completely worked up in pencil with the stern delicately strengthened with wash but with the typical flat wash along the side.
