Portrait of a gentleman

The subject of this portrait, once thought to be Charles Blount, Earl of Devonshire, is unidentified, although, according to the inscription 'AEsuae 29 1596' the sitter was aged 29 when the portrait was painted in 1596, giving a birth date of around 1567. The sitter is richly dressed and wears an embroidered black doublet, trunk hose and a goffered linen ruff. His sword belt is of woven gold and silver thread. In the upper left hand corner is a ship under sail and a hand waving her on and the inscription 'Le Semblable' [The Same]. The artist is at present unidentified, but the portrait is of high quality.
