Portrait of the 'Mordaunt'
Portrait of the 'Mordaunt', 46 guns, viewed from slightly before the starboard beam. She was built 1681, bought from Lord Mordaunt in 1683, and wrecked in 1693. The ship's lower-masts and topsail yards are visible; the spritsail topmast is not shown. The decks of the ship are crowded with people. The ship's ports are wreathed. The drawing is rubbed on the back and is thus possibly an offset, though completely worked up in accurate pencil and wash, much in the manner of the Younger but betraying the hand of the Elder in the laboured rendering of the beakhead bulkhead and quarter-gallery. The drawing has been approximately dated by its style and subject-matter.
Willem van de Velde, the Elder
