Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Calder (1745-1815)
Probably the portrait exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1798, the year after the Battle of St Vincent at which Calder was first captain to Sir John Jervis in the 'Victory'. At the Battle of the Glorious First of June (1794) he commanded the 'Theseus' and in the portrait he wears the First of June medal. In July 1805 he tried to prevent Villeneuve reaching Ferrol from the West Indies. In the resulting action he did not press his advantage and the French fleet got away. Calder was recalled, court-martialled and severely reprimanded. Lemuel Francis Abbott
