Scimitar

Scimitar, which belonged to Captain John Croft Hawkins (1798-1851). The hilt of the scimitar is of the 'Mameluke' type. The polished ivory grip is set with four jewelled studs on each side. The sword has an embossed gilt back-piece, gilt quillons and pointed langets. Captain John Croft Hawkins visited the Persian Gulf in command of the 'Clive' of the Indian Navy, and presumably the scimitar was given to him to mark that visit.
