Ship of 38 guns, deck detail with ship's boats

Scale 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a frigate (circa 1805) built plank on frame in the Georgian style. Model is decked, equipped, and fully rigged with a full suit of sails set. The hull is complete with copper sheathing which was added in the 1960's by Jim Lees in the Museum's workshop. At this scale, the model represents a ship measuring 104 feet on the lower deck by 37 feet in the beam and an approximate tonnage of 900, builders old measurement. By the end of the 18th century, these heavily armed frigates were used in a variety of roles such as fleet reconnaissance, patrolling the sea lanes and as escorts for convoys of merchant ships. Built in large numbers by private as well as the royal dockyards, the frigate took part in virtually every major action during the Napoleonic Wars.
