Stand by tubes. The control room of HMS 'Stubborn'
Dring studied as a painter at the Slade School of Art in the 1920s. As an Official War Artist in the Second World War, he made a large number of portrait drawings of individuals and groups, all remarkable for their informality. The drawing is always precise and carefully modelled using pastel, a medium in which he specialised. This large, ambitious pastel of 1943 demonstrates Dring's skilful use of the medium and his ability to make drawings of complicated technical subjects. 'Stand by tubes' is the order to be ready to fire torpedoes. On 11 February 1944 while on patrol off the Norwegian coast, 'Stubborn' successfully attacked a German convoy. Two days later she attacked another but was crippled by depth charges. Surfacing at night she radioed for help and a destroyer came out and towed her home.
