'Sultana' (1768)

Scale: 1:48. A modern full hull model of the 'Sultana' (1768), a cargo schooner built plank on frame by an amateur model maker. Model is decked, equipped and fully rigged with sails set. A typical example of a schooner of the late 18th century and was the classical merchantman built in the American colonies prior to the Revolution. Measuring 50 feet in length by 16 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 52, the `Sultana' was built by Benjamin Hallowell of Boston in 1768. Visiting Britain with a cargo from Boston, the `Sultana' was bought into the Royal Navy and used as a despatch vessel. During this period the lines were taken off and the original plan drawn up at the time is now part of the NMM collection. `Sultana' was eventually sold out of the Navy in 1772.
