The 'Great Eastern' under construction, the position of the sternpost screw
The 36-ton cast-iron propeller of the 'Great Eastern' was carried on a shaft 150 feet long, weighing 60 tons. The position of the screw propeller is evident in this picture taken during the vessel's construction at Millwall.
