War clouds
This pen and ink and grey wash drawing is typical of the drawings that Wyllie produced for reproduction in the early 1900s. It is probably a comment on the Japanese attack on the Russian fleet at Port Arthur in February 1904 at the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War. The Russian Bear, orientated to the east, is confronted by the Japanese Samurai who face west. This drawing is one of a number of black and white drawings of naval actions of the war, which Wyllie probably made for publication in the 'Illustrated London News'.
