Warship, first class torpedo boat, HMS 'Lightning' (1877)

Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of HMS Lightning (1877), a first class torpedo boat. The model is mounted on its original turned brass pillars, which are secured to a modern wooden storage baseboard. The vessel is shown decked and fully equipped including a single fourteen inch torpedo tube mounted over the bow and two single torpedoes mounted on their launching cradles amidships. The hull is painted black below the waterline, with light grey topsides. The deck is painted a light brown and has a dark wood deckhouse at the stern, and a light grey superstructure amidships over the engine room. It is complete with various fittings such as a single anchor, a wheel and binnacle just forward of the funnel which is painted a light sandy colour with a black top, and a large hand operated winch on the starboard side. There is a large ventilator cowling together with a wooden glazed skylight to provide lighting and ventilation to the engine room below.

The deckhouse, which is built in a dark varnished natural wood and has a roof painted white, is complete with a pair of ventilator cowlings, stove pipe and a pair of hinged doors at the rear for access. The hull is fitted with a single three-bladed screw with a pair of rudders above and below the shaft.
